Of the myriads of things that Vanderbilt University does well, football is a long way down the list, with the Nashville SEC program last reaching a bowl game in 2018 and going a decade without a winning season.
This year is no exception for the Commodores, as year Four of the Clark Lea era in Nashville appears set for a lot of losing, with the team at FanDuel Sportsbook Tennessee giving the university a preseason win total over/under of 2.5 in 2024.
Such a feat would be the second straight season where the Commodores failed to clear three regular season wins in the SEC (and the fourth time since 2020), coming on the heels of last year’s 2-10 campaign.
Utilizing FanDuel Tennesee Sportsbook’s current win total for the 2024 college football season, Vanderbilt was found to be set at 2.5 wins (-158 over). Utilizing SportsReference.com, we found all teams with a 2.5-win total line in the last 3 seasons and how they performed.

Can Vandy Continue NCAAF’s 2.5 Over Streak?
Of the 15 teams with 2.5-win total over/under figures in the last three years, nine of them went on to clear that figure, averaging out to a 60% clearing percentage, with an average win total of 2.93.
Since 2019, the Commodores have averaged 2.4 wins per season, with the high point (if you can call it that) being their 5-7 finish in 2022, when they went 2-6 in SEC play, which was also the most victories they’ve had in conference competition since going 3-5 in 2018.
This year, Vandy plays Virginia Tech, Alcorn State, Georgia State and Ball State in the non-conference portion of the season, along with SEC games against Missouri, Kentucky, Auburn and LSU on the road, to go with home clashes against Alabama, Texas, South Carolina and Tennessee.
With the right mixture of good luck and good play, maybe Vanderbilt can sneak through the season with a few upset wins and manage to take care of business outside of SEC play to pad their year-end record and clear the school’s preseason win total in 2024.
For now, what we know is that it appears that this fall will be a long one for fans of the Commodores in Nashville and beyond, with Vanderbilt looking like the SEC’s punching bag when the football season gets started this fall.
