To say Tennessee is a heavy favorite would be an understatement. Despite Chattanooga's successes at the FCS level, the Volunteers are picked to win by nearly six touchdowns by oddsmakers. For the over to hit, Tennessee may need some help from the Chattanooga offense. Tennessee had the same record (9-4) against the spread last season as it did overall.

What the Spread Tells Us

With a 38.5-point spread, oddsmakers expect the Volunteers to score early and often. Under head coach Josh Heupel, Tennessee has shown the ability to score points. After leading the nation in scoring in 2022, the Volunteers averaged nearly 32 points per game last season.

What the Moneyline Tells Us

The moneyline suggests that Tennessee should win going away. For Tennessee sports bettors who truly believe in the Mocs, this is a chance to make a really nice chunk of change. Listed at +8000, a $10 bet on Chattanooga to win outright would pay $800. A $100 bet would pay $8,000.

Tennessee Chances to Win vs. Chattanooga in Week 1

Although the 2020 opener was vacated, Tennessee will look to continue a trend of starting 1-0. The Volunteers enter the season having won four straight season openers. Chattanooga is almost a six-touchdown underdog. The Mocs were walloped by Alabama and Illinois over the last two seasons, but have been competitive in the past against FBS teams from major conferences. It lost a hard-fought 28-23 contest at Kentucky in 2021.

How the Volunteers Win vs. Chattanooga

For Tennessee to start 1-0 for the fifth straight season, it will probably just need to avoid critical mistakes. In its four losses last season, Tennessee averaged 7.5 penalties per defeat. If the Volunteers do that, it should provide a nice opportunity for Nico Iamaleava to settle in and get comfortable behind center before a difficult SEC slate. It should also provide an opportunity for lots of young players to get reps.

How the Mocs Win vs. Tennessee

For Chattanooga to top Tennessee, it will have to play an almost perfect game. A preseason All-Southern Conference selection, the Mocs will need a huge game from UCLA transfer Chase Artopoeus at quarterback. Chattanooga will also likely need to be the recipient of a few takeaways. Preseason SoCon Defensive Player of the Year Marlon Taylor will likely need a monster game from his defensive tackle position.

History of Volunteers vs. Mocs Series

Once Southern Conference rivals, the Tennessee-Chattanooga series spans back to 1892. Although the teams spent just 12 seasons in the same conference, they met every year for 20 straight seasons from 1945 to 1964. In a series that dates back to 1892, it has been a lopsided one. Tennessee enters its contest against Chattanooga with a 40-2-2 record all-time. The Volunteers have won the last 10 meetings in the series.

Tennessee won 24 straight matchups from 1913 to 1957. The last meeting was a 45-0 shutout for the Volunteers back in 2019, giving Tennessee its first win of the season. Jarrett Guarantano passed for three touchdowns while the Tennessee defense forced five turnovers.

All-Time Best Tennessee/Chattanooga Games

With the series lopsided in favor of Tennessee, there haven't been many thrillers over the years, but that doesn't mean there haven't been any. Below are a look back at the notable matchups between the schools.

Nov. 20, 1909: Tennessee 0, Chattanooga 0

The first of two ties between the schools was considered a victory for Chattanooga — at least by the local newspaper. The Chattanooga Daily News read "Moccasins Defeat U.T.," "Scoreless Game a Great Victory for U. of C." and "Dreams of Volunteers Fail to Materialize." The 1-6-2 campaign for Tennessee served as its worst ever at the time. A year later, the teams tied again — this time in Knoxville by a score of 6-6.

Oct. 31, 1914: Chattanooga 0, Tennessee 67

The most lopsided victory in the series came on Halloween 1914 and for the Mocs, it was a scary sight. Things however, didn't go south in a hurry until after halftime. Tennessee scored eight touchdowns in the second half to turn a semi-competitive contest into a rout for the ages.

Nov. 8, 1958: Chattanooga 14, Tennessee 6

The last Chattanooga win in the series came in 1958 as the Moccasins guaranteed the Volunteers their first non-winning season in four years. Quarterback John Green scored both touchdowns for Chattanooga. It marked the first victory over Tennessee in 29 tries.
