What Big Tennessee Cities Are Most Forgotten?

Fact Checked by Thomas Leary

With a population of just under 7 million people spread across hundreds of miles from the Great Smoky Mountains in the east to the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River to the west, it’s no wonder that certain parts of the state of Tennessee will be overlooked in the long run.

With that in mind, it’s likely of little surprise to learn that Tennessee cities like Hendersonville, Jackson and Franklin were the most forgotten places in the Volunteer State, according to a survey that was conducted recently.

BetTennessee.com - your top source for Tennessee sports betting - wondered which big cities tend to be forgotten the most. A quiz on Sporcle.com asked respondents to fill in the blanks for the top 10 most populous cities in Tennessee. We then ranked the cities based on the percentage of people who remembered them within the quiz’s time limit.

Which TN City Is Forgotten About The Most?

With a correct response percentage of 23.4%, the “winner” of the honor of being Tennessee’s most forgotten city in 2025 was Hendersonville, with Nashville area suburb scoring 23.4% to beat out Jackson (42.2%) and Franklin (43.2%) for the top spot.

Throw in other Volunteer State cities like Johnson City (44.2%), Clarksville (48.2%) and Murfreesboro (51.7%) and you have the upper end of the Tennessee forgotten cities list covered, with Chattanooga (75.2%), Knoxville (84.6%), Memphis (94.6%) and Nashville (98.5%) being the final cities to make the cut.

Still, at the end of the day no city in the Volunteer State held a candle when it came to obscurity to the Sumner County suburban hamlet with a population of just under 62,000 people, with Henderson taking home that honor in 2025.
