When it comes to Christmas trees, it appears that Tennessee residents have their share of personal opinions on the topic, with Volunteer State residents being evenly split on putting up artificial trees versus the real thing as Dec. 25 rolls ever closer.
Given the state’s bounty of coniferous trees in the forests of varying corners of Tennessee, there’s no doubt that many can find a quality tree without straining too hard, which likely contributes to the embrace of real trees, while others still opt for the ease of use that comes from artificial trees.
Holiday season is in full swing. At BetTennessee.com - home to all things Tennessee sports betting - we were curious if locals in the Volunteer state prefer real or artificial Christmas trees. Using Google Trends, we compared the search interest scores for “real Christmas trees” and “artificial Christmas trees.” The search period was 11/30/2023-12/25/2023 and filtered to only include Tennessee.
Type | Score |
Real Tree | 4 |
Artificial Tree | 4 |
Metro | Type | Percentage of Preference |
Memphis | Artificial Tree | 52% |
Nashville | Artificial Tree | 57% |
Knoxville | Tie | 50% |
Chattanooga | Real Tree | 54% |
It appears that Tennessee’s populace is deadlocked when it comes to Christmas tree preferences, with real trees and artificial ones both scoring four search interest points apiece during the period in question, illustrating just how entrenched both sides are in the Xmas tree debate.
When broken down by metropolitan areas, Tennessee’s two largest metropolitan areas (Memphis and Nashville) went with artificial trees over real ones by margins of 52%-to-48% in the Bluff City, while the Music City finished with a 57%-to-43% split in favor of fake Christmas trees.
The results were more muddied in places like Knoxville, where both real and fake trees gained 50% of votes, and the southeastern city of Chattanooga, which chose real trees over artificial ones by a final score of 54%-to-46% in favor of wood over plastic.
In the end, it appears that both sides of the Christmas tree debate are entrenched in their opinions, with the state of Tennessee appearing deadlocked when it comes to which type of festive centerpiece is best, with real trees and artificial ones scoring even levels of support in the Volunteer State.
